Safety Tips for Online Dating |

When it comes to online dating, it is deifnitely better to be safe than sorry. Some of you
will think, I do not want to spoil things by being paranoid, so you need to
know some of the facts.
According to a Pew Internet & American Life Project (12/05), 66% of the people
reported that online dating is a dangerous activity because it puts personal
information on the internet. 57% of online dating site users agree that a lot of
people using online dating services lie about their marital status.
If people are that willing to lie about being married or not, how many of these
complete strangers that you meet online do you think are going to reveal a
criminal past? None, and that is what makes running a background check
mandatory. Before you find out anything about this person, including whether
they are compatible, you first need to know if they are being honest.
Take the time to get to know someone online for a period of time. Whats the
rush? Find out everything you can including their full name, address and date of
birth. If you have been communicating by email for awhile, and want to possibly
meet, speak on the
phone first and try to get a feel for who this person is and what they are like.
Anyone that is reluctant to speak on the phone with you before meting is more
than likely a scam artist of some kind, or worse. You can stop communicating
with this person right
away.
Once you make the decision to meet in person, run a background check . If you
are happy with what you learn, select a place that is public and in a good part
of town. Pick some place that is not too noisy or crowded. You want to get a
clear view or the
person and be able to hear them well. Staying alert during the date is important
as its possible for any of us to be fooled by a good actor.
Arrange for your own transportation to and from the date, do not have them pick
you up. First dates have the potential to go bad quickly and you want to make
sure you have safe passage home.
Always make sure that at least two friends or family members know where you are
going and low you expect to be. Have one of them be expecting your phone call at
any time. You can politely excuse yourself at a pre-arranged time to make a
check-in call
with your contact. Agree in advance on a range of time to call and then follow
through so they arent worried.
Keep alcohol consumption to a minimum or none at all would be even better.
Always keep an eye on your glass and food. You want to keep a clear head and
ensure that no one is drugging your food or drink. You dont have to act
suspicious, just be aware.
If at any time, you get a gut feeling that this person has misrepresented
themselves, or they just give you the creeps in any way, then just get up and
leave early. Its always better to be safe than sorry.
You dont want to ruin your enjoyment by being unduly suspect. Most people are
really there just to get to know you have no intention of causing you harm. And,
if you have taken the step of running a good background check, you can rest
assured that they are telling you the truth and move on to getting to know each
other better.
